" Big Ups to the V.A "
Last Friday, the state of Virginia became the fourteenth U.S State to ban the question about a criminal past on job applications for most state jobs. This is beneficial for many people, because it stops that automatic "brick wall" that almost guarantees them being pushed down or knocked-off the candidate list. Don't get me wrong back-ground checks are needed in my opinion and some crimes can not be forgotten. However, this is a blessed opportunity for many people to be looked at by the "Content of their current Character" and not be limited to being knocked-out without further examination.
The arrest question has hurt many that when you think of it may have not deserved to be eliminated solely off that one or two questions. In my Criminal Justice class, I learned that there were five kinds/varieties of crime (crime of necessity, crime of convenience, crime of passion, crime of hate, and crime of greed) as well as numerous other explainable or unexplainable reasons for crime.
Therefore, I believe this ban can help because instead of automatically denying a person a job based on two questions, this new law can get to the root of the crime and the person who committed the crime. Thus, this ban is helpful to the Mother that may had to do something unfortunate for the benefit of her child like steal diapers or formula (a crime of necessity) . Also, the ban is beneficial to the "Young Brother" that life got ruined for a idiotic mistake he made five-ten years ago (something stupid like vandalism: which is a crime of convenience). Last, it can help someone who falls into a gray area. With all of the recent protest and rallies that have been going on; a lot of people got arrested like Dr. Cornel West (for just being passionate or just being at the protest). Again, thats why this ban is important and can solve many unanswered questions that the two on the application can not fully answer.
In closing, I am a big believer in the good of humanity and although I believe in Karma I also believe a person can change. I believe that this can help many individuals who actually are trying to get their life together. Also, it helps those who have fallen into the "trap" of modern day bondage. According to the NAACP, 1 out of every 31 adults is under some kind of correctional control. Also, according to NAACP nearly one and six African-American males are incarcerated (I hate statistics). Although, I don't believe in statistics and I know that my "Brown Brothers" are not numbers this is troubling even if one percent of my brothers are arrested. Further, I know the heart of many of my oppressed "Brothers"; I know GOD can change people and JESUS saves. Therefore, I know that many of my "Brothers" are not bad, but fall into the "trap" of their environment. I truly hope this law does some good in this country.
