"Were Are Our Athletes?"
As a kid and up until this point sports have ruled my life. All I wanted to be was a athlete and everything that came with it. The money, fame, and supernatural abilities to be more than the average man. However, I need to make this one thing clear.
"With great power comes, great responsibility."- Superman
It was around the start of the NBA Season (Dec. 2014) when my Heart was filled with so much joy I did not know what to do with myself. I took a priceless and undescribable proud in seeing my Brothers being in unity fighting injustice; in solidarity my Brothers from several NBA Teams (some of which included at that time the two biggest names in Basketball Kobe and LeBron) wore "I Can't Breathe" T-shirts in response to the unnecessary and illegal choking death of Mr. Eric Garner. I can only image this feeling of proud and strength is what my mentors, elder family members, and people born before 1968 must have felt when Mr. Tommie Smith and Mr. John Carlos raised up their Black-Gloved Covered Fists in the 1968 Olympics in which they Saluted Black Power. This simple, yet all powerful gesture brought hope and realization to many Afro-American living in a unjust as well as racist society.
Anyway, this is how I felt during this night beyond excited for the future. My hurt and burdened soul had a hope for change. I thought that for the first time since 1968 my Brothers had finally open their eyes to see the world as it is. I thought that for once they took off their "Cash Rules Everything Around Me" DRUNK GOGGLES and they where ready to actually help bring about change in the racially and discriminative system that has oppressed our people since our ancestors were brought here in chains some 400 years ago (1619).
However, unfortunately that one night proved to be just that. For one day they where doing what was right. Something to say to all their fans and supports "We see what happening. But, I am here to tell you some or One Night is not enough.
We need guys that are going stand up and help fight for the voiceless. The voiceless and unappreciated; the some people from your old neighborhoods. The same people that you come from. The same people who are actually YOU without a GOOD JUMP SHOOT or GOOD 40-Time in the Combine.
To be honest, there are many good Brothers in Professional Sports. Some of which help our communities without the Camera Phones' or News Crews Around. However, we need change and I thought the definition of a Hero is one who helps people in a time of NEED. While, that what we need right now HELP. Someone at the top with enough influence and MAN Power to bring LIGHT into the Darkness.
In closing, have OUR ATHLETES FAILED US? Personally, I don't completely think so, but CHANGE NEEDS TO COME. And without a doubt, change would come faster if our brothers with influence take a more hands on approach. Its either now or never for everyone around the world right now. No matter the cause, if Civil Rights and even basic Human Rights are being taken away or not even given in the first place: Silence is Consent.
PS: Thanks to All the Athletes who at least did at least take some action for Eric Garner and many others. However, more needs to be done. There should be no playoff today, but there is. We can not win the real "battle" if we are divided.
JUST SOMETHING I WANT Y'ALL TO THINK ABOUT.
