College 2016 Style Guide: Young Black Man Edition

When you dress well, you feel better. When you feel better, you preform the daily tasks of life more proficiently. I also believe that style is a way to express, and show your individuality. Clothes don't make the man. But, clothes add a layer of personality, and your appearance is the first thing people pay attention too. Therefore, dressing well is extremely important to me. In this blog post, I will show you some major keys on how to dress, or even if you know how to dress well, then I will give you some of my inside tips. 1. My personal style To understand this type of style guide, I want to start by addressing my personal style. As a young black male, we are judged and unfairly seen in a negative light. To me, no matter what I wear, I will still be seen in whatever manner people want to see me as for that moment. However, I believe that when dressing well, we are extremely more confident and in control. Independent studies show, people who dress well are seen as more m...

Mr. Alton Sterling & Mr. Philando Castile

I sat at my computer, and I logged on to Twitter. To my shocked, yet unsurprised emotions, another Black Man was killed in America. Once again, another hashtag was created. A father of children, and a provider killed again. His name was, no IS Mr. Alton Sterling. Mr. Sterling like I stated above was a father, and a man just trying to do what he could to be what he knew was being a man. In addition, as I read his case and looked at him. Something got me, and hit me hard. His stature and expressions reminded me of yet another case of a Black Man being killed that broke my heart: Mr. Eric Garner. Both men, simply doing the American way is of Entrepreneurship to make ends make. To take care of their families. However, both are gone to soon. Mr. Sterling is another case of the plight of being a Black Man in America. However, the situation and the state of my emotions got worse. Before I could even grief or disgust the case of Mr. Sterling murder, I heard that possible another black man wa...

RIP Muhammad Ali (The Greatest)

As you have heard the sad news by now, the great Muhammad Ali has passed on. He was laid to rest yesterday. When I say passed on, he has moved on to another journey. To another place to inspire, love, encourage, and communicate without bounds or limits. Mr. Ali is free yet again. I don't have to say what Mr. Ali meant to me. Just from past articles, tweets, and videos, you guys already know what he meant to me. He was a inspiration, hero, mentor, and someone to look up to and listen; learning and hanging on to has every word. Even if those words were 50 years old, they still hold relevance to this very day. I am keeping this post short, because no true words can describe what he meant to me, to all of us. However, I will end this post like this. Heroes are remembered, but legends never die. Therefore, he was the greatest legend ALL-TIME. And, he will live on as long as WE as a PEOPLE are still ALIVE!!!!! Rest Easy Champ!!!!!!!

Be Your Biggest Encourager, Promoter, and Motivator Part 1

Yo, what good family!!!!!!!!!!! Been a while seen I made a post. I hope everything is well and progressing in your life. I have now finished finals and now I am heading into this summer with the most quickness. Anyway, I never disappear from the surface, you can always find me on Twitter: @BrownBrotherWeb or YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSNiyryvOpwPgzip6athbMQ Anyway, I wanted to talk about the importance of being your biggest motivator, encourager, and promoter. In this cold and crazy world, you will find that you have to be your biggest fan. Few in this world will love you like your mom. And, only ONE loved you before your mother was even born  (The One Universal GOD). So, I say this to simply say, you must be able to love yourself. To uplift and be confident in your abilities. Doing all of this without at times the pat on the back from friends. Only you can unlock your full potential. Only you can truly find the most complete and best state of your...

What is progression?

For years people of color have been fighting. Fighting, screaming, crying, longing, begging, demanding, and peacefully asking to be treated fairly. However, with much sorrow and defeat, the call for equal treatment has been met with a unmistakable harsh NO. If you think I wrong, name all of the twitter hashtags of young black people killed in America. You can't, because there are to many to count. To many to individually grieve for and hurt for because of their untimely deaths. To many to individually solve and eventually figure out why. In cases like these, there are more questions than answers. As a adult you try to figure out the situation for yourself. Try to digest and process your emotions. However, on top of all that, you have eyes looking at you. A child, young sibling, or cousin. In other words, someone more innocent and at times more emotionally vulnerable than you. After years of heart-breaking verdicts, and just living this unfair and hard like, we adapt. We grow th...

#PositiveBlackMan

Hi, its April 1st. So, new month and new results are here. It is time to seize the moment, while it is here right now. Anyway, I want to talk about a new campaign/project we are working on. If you follow the Brown Brother on twitter: @BrownBrotherWeb , you will see we got some good things going on over there. If your not following us, you are missing out. Because we have yet another hashtag that we are doing to raise awareness. However, instead of raising awareness for a injustice, we are doing one to spread positivity and prosperity. The hashtag that we have started is #PositiveBlackMan #PositiveBlackMan is a hashtag that was created to counter the negativity that is attached to the black male through the media, propaganda, and untrue, yet active stereotypes that have been around longer than any one of us. So, this hashtag is basically self-explanatory. Every day at various times, we tweet out two positive images of Black Males of any and all ages. We balance the negativit...

FASFA

I try to explore different topics and ideas to discuss/share on the blog. While going through some papers and looking through some stuff, I remember that I forget to write about this topic. Therefore, today we are going to talk about FASFA. First, you may ask, "What is FASFA." FASFA is federal aid or money for going to college. Although they said "federal aid", it is basically tax that is set aside for students who want to go to college, but need money to help pay for college. FASFA is available to students who have need and are looking to attend college (certificate program, associate degree, or 4 year degree). You need to fill out FASFA every year. FASFA should be filled out by any and every student. It is something that will without a doubt helpful in paying for school. A simple summary is basically this: (1) Wait until you or parents file Income Tax (2) Go to this website- https://fafsa.ed.gov/ (3) Create a account (4) Fill out all of the informat...

Are You, Your Biggest Enemy?

This weekend, I got to fully watch Creed. I know I'm late, but I still wanted to support the movie. Excellent movie and a good $12 dollar spent, cheat-quality entertainment. Anyway, I watched the movie Creed and it was good. As I watch a movie, I try to watch the storyline. However, most importantly, I try to watch the small messages inside the movie I am watching. I try to analyze and breakdown the scenes as they each tell a individual story. So, I wanted to discuss something and make a thought provoking post. It is inspired from the movie. In the scene during the movie, Apollo Creed Jr. (Michael B. Jordan) lived a troubled childhood. Because of the death of his father and a adoptive mother, he grew up feeling like he didn't have a family. He grew up with a chip on his shoulder. A chip that landed him in consistent trouble. However, after learning boxing and then linking up with Rocky (Stallone), he begins to try to become a fighter and figure out is he just as good or bet...

Kam Chancellor & Race

If you haven't heard the news, a story come out a little while ago about Kam Chancellor. For those that don't watch football, Kam Chancellor is a pro-bowler and Super Bowl champion for the Seattle Seahawks. Without getting into his accomplishments or achievements on the football field, I want to talk abut what happen to him off the field a few weeks ago. I am truly sick of having this conversation. The conversation of race and stereotypes. The true life events about being minimized into just race or a conversation of race. However, it needs to be highlighted and discussed. It shows the fact that no matter how much green you got, your brown skin stills makes you a subject for stereotypes and racism. That you can not hide from the skin your in. And, that at any time a brother must be able to be honest with himself about the nature of people in this world. Anyway, here is a summary of what happened. As stated, Kam Chancellor is a football player. Because this is the off-seas...

Brown Brother Book Club

Since the creation of this blog, we have always had a selected book that was chosen to give some new materiel to read and something that might broaden our knowledge. Something that was made to strengthen us in a specific area of our life. Well, basically for the last few months, the book list has been non-existent. I thought the idea was a little to repetitive and we needed something different. However, through this lack of reading posts, I found that the Book of the Month was something that y'all looked forward too. The book of the month, was a powerful asset and one that was beloved. It gave ideas and the books help strength the mind and spirit. Therefore, the books are returning. We are going to start the Brown Brother Book Club. The book club is like non-other. The book club is one that is designed and geared for young black males. Every book, every month will be one that is for young black males and gives the idea/mindsets used. The books will be chosen based on what t...

The things that you see are what you believe!

"Praying to sky all black, looking up at the stars like the finna talk back."- Big Sean "Beware" I could not think of an accurate title for this post, so I just went with what was in my head. I know it is not a great title, but just bare with me. As always, I try to incorporate with I have learned in school with this blog. I try to teach and open eyes, just as my eyes are being opened now. I think what is so amazing about what is happening over here on this blog is the fact that it is not written by someone who knows everything. Not someone who has fully experienced life and is coming from a all-knowing angle. No, this blog is dedicated to young brothers who are going through life currently. And this blog is written by myself. a young brother who is going through life right now. I said it all the time, but we are growing together in this world. Trying to figure things out and solve the mysteries of life. Or at least unlock the true potential that lies in ea...

Personal Finance for Black Males

I don't follow Kanye West on any social media outlet. I don't listen to any of Kanye West music, and when he become "Kanye West Kardishian", I really stopped listening to him. However, every since he was approaching his album release, he has been tweeting like a mad man. He has been trending non-stop on Twitter, and a lot of his tweets have been outrageous. However, one caught my attention and the attention of countless others. He stated in one of his tweets that he is "53 Million Dollars" in personal debt. Now, I think that Kanye is either a good actor or mentally insane. But, either way, if he owes 53 million dollars to anybody then this is beyond shameful. I heard that Kanye is begging Facebook's owner (Mark Zuckerberg) for money and is asking for people to pray for him. Now, I have zero sympathy for Kanye West. But, I do feel that he is not the same Kanye West that everyone respected. He is not the same Jesus Walks, Kanye. But, anyway this mad...

"Top 10" Unique Inventions by Black Men

Well, it is Black History Month. This is the time to honor those in the past and plan for the future. If you follow me on Twitter, you will see that I have retweeting Black History facts on the daily. And, not just any old facts, but facts that even I did not know. I have began to find some amazing things on their. For more daily facts, follow me @BrownBrotherWeb on Twitter. Anyway, that got me to thinking. Every Black History Month, we usually hear the same facts. And, to those who are new to the idea of being aware of our greatness may get confused or closed in. Meaning, they think are achievements are limited to the same ones that they always hear. Therefore, I wanted to compiled a list of little know Black History Facts. Particularly, a list of things that were invented by Black Men. I wanted to do this to show our greatness and make those aware who are not that we are greater than any of our circumstances. That greatness can be achieved by anyone, and the only thing that one...

Supreme Court Justice

This week has been a one of major news stories. One of the biggest is the death of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia. He was a more "conservative" Supreme Court Justice. Now, you may ask, what does this have to do with us? First, the Supreme Court Justice are the most powerful group in government. They make most of the final rulings in this country's major decisions. In addition, although the president is the leader of this country, they are the "appointed leaders of justice." They bring the supposed justice to the country in making rulings on laws. The are not the DOJ, but the "Big Bosses" in DC. Second, it has a lot to do with us because they make the final rulings. Meaning laws like the voting act, ex-convicts voting rights, affirmative action, or any other major law goes through them as the final decision. They say "yes or no" to the things that can affect many of those around us. Last, this has a lot to do with us because the fi...

Awesome Kong

I dedicate this post to all the Sisters out here, this character in no way reflects y'all. This is shameful and awful. Y'all are beautiful and to have a racist company produce such garbage in even 2016 shows that we all (Black Men and Women) have a long way to go. It is reported that profession wrestling is a male dominated sport. Over 80% of the "wrestlers'' on mots company's rosters are male. Almost all of those watching wrestling like WWE is watched by males (over 70%). Let me say for the record, I stop watching wrestling a while ago. I have always been a little more aware of situations than most kids my age by then. Second, as I got older and start liking the opposite gender, it felt weird watching dudes in tights down around the round. It is nothing right about that. Anyway, if you want to know more about why I stopped watching wrestling and why I think sports is racist, go checkout my Racism in sports article. Further, it help set up this post, i...

How To Celebrate Black History Everyday

I usually also make so kind of Black History Special. Further, I always have like so Black History facts everyday. However, although I might start on the Black History facts, I have deeply changed in my beliefs. We have discussed this over and over again. I feel that I have changed in mind and spirit. Therefore, instead of the usual hallmark greeting card type posting, I wanted to show you something different. As you know, Black History Month is a one month holiday given to us by the same leaders that killed our leaders. The same that enslaved our ancestors, and put drugs in our communities. And, the to add insult to deep unhealable injury, they gave us the shortest month of the year as a holiday. Therefore, like Columbus Day and Thanksgiving, I don't celebrate the selected day. I celebrate the souls, the movements, the marching shoes, and organizers that have given us the chance to have a lot bit more opportunity than they had. Therefore, like I said instead of giving a list...

Just my thoughts

If I could look at myself some years back, I don't know what I would think. Heck, if I could like at myself just a few months ago, I don't know what I would think. Some of the words I would use for myself a few years ago would be not ready, naïve, or just simply lacking the tools that I have right now. A lot of my logic and ideology has change. Even the things we discuss on the blog. I tried to be more quiet, but I think about what type of lyrics we hear during songs, and I figured I can't be quiet forever. That I had to take risk, that it was my job to reach as many brothers as possible. My job on this earth is to bring truth and give young brothers a idea or two. My job is to bring unity and dissolve the divide and hate that has hindered us for years. My thoughts and ideas are not perfect, but they are getting better as I begin to see the world. A lot has happened and changed since I first wrote a post on here. Secondly, I have spent countless hours reading, writing...

RIP Michael Freeney

I wanted to share some news about some sad news I just learned. A young brother who was a bright and promising journalist just died. Michael Freeney age 32 was a brother who was just about to start his dream job. He succumb to a illness that he had been fighting for a couple of days. This brother and I had several small conversations. We talked about race and sports. One thing that I got from him was that he was aware of the things around him. He loved to talk about WWE & professional sports. And, he put me on to the knowledge and videos when I did the article "Race in WWE & sports." Although I did not get a chance to meet the brother in person, I feel a certain way knowing that I had conversation with him. I got a small view into another person's world and thought process. And now that person and thought process has gone to a different place. Death is weird, it is strange. But, all I can say is appreciate and support those when they are here. Don't wa...
