" The Barber Shop "
I told y'all I was going to down more lifestyle/life post. Therefore, today I want to talk about The Barber Shop.
For many of Us as African-American Males, the Barber shop means many things. A place to vent, a place to roast, a place to get advice, and etc. To many others it means even more, the Barber Shop for many African-American Males is the only place/time to be around other Black Males figures. Many of our Barbers are mentors, friends, father figures, and allies. In the Barber Shop, we become part of who we are and it builds connects (some for a lifetime).
Further, we can go into the thing that brings Us superpowers: The Cuts. I can't explain it exactly, however when you get a fresh cut; you feel like a new man. A better man. With a fresh cut, your confidence and moral is at its highest. With a fresh cut, you feel like you can tackle the world.
Another thing I think about is Us as a people with Barber Shops. Most Barber Shops are black owned. Because of the sad statistic that I always state on here; Barber Shops are at times the only time we give Black Money to Black Businesses. With these finance transactions, we are supporting our culture and raising another set of Young Brothers off the things that made Us who we are.
The Barber Shop is something more than just a shop. For Us the barber shop represents a series of things. The Barber Shop represents second chances for Brothers who were locked up and made previous mistakes. The Barber Shop (Barber or shop sweeper) is honest work and a honest living. Something to be proud of and what your hands you create something that changes/lift's a person's life. The Barber Shop is truly a Black Men's job. The Soul, pureness, and manhood of the cuts as well as the environment is a place that can't be compared.
Inside the walls of the barber shop you become closer to being a man. You learn streets smarts and business smarts. You learn what respect is and how to achieve it for yourself. You learn about so many things that the very experience of entering those doors is worth more than any price of a fade.
The Barber is a safe haven for Us as people and our community. Particularly, as Young African-American Males; we need this experience to become strong Black Men. I love the barber shop and all the joys, experiences, as well as advice that it has passed down to me.
In closing, the Barber Shop is a special place. Like any thing else (job, girlfriend, or Church); finding a good Barber Shop is hard but when you do: It is worth more than gold.
