"Small town n****, Hollywood dreams
I know that everything that glitters ain't gold
I know the sh*** not always good as it seems
But tell me till you get it how could you know
How could you know? How could you know?" - J. Cole "Tale of 2 Cities"
" Everything That Glitters Ain't Gold "
Everything that glitters isn't gold. This is something major that I want to express to y'all. In a society were gold is everything (gold chains, gold I-phones 6S, and gold grilled rappers), we as young Black males can easily lose our way if we feed into the "trap."
Further, unless your parents are rich, there is no such "legal thing" as quick money. Therefore, not only could a brother lose his way, but you could lose your life trying to get rich quick. In addition, if you don't lose your life, you can lose your freedom. In my book and on the blog, I explained the new "modern-day" slavery. I explained to y'all what the 13th Amendment meant and etc.
Anyway, everything that glitters ain't gold. First, let me explain the truth behind what I'm saying. Do you really think the penalty of losing your life or freedom is worth wearing a "gold chain" for a year or two?
Have you weighed how much of themselves, did the person with a the gold and flash had to give up to obtain his status?
Deep down, are you really willing to sell your soul to the devil for a "rap career" or gold?
I mean, I know I'm asking a lot of questions, but look at what people are considering as success or happiness in 2015 (a gold watch or rims). This is crazy.
Real man, don't get obsessed with materiel things.
Kirk Franklin said in his song, "I'd rather have Jesus then silver and gold."
However, rather consciously or unconsciously, brothers are saying "I'll rather sell my freedom/life for a little piece of gold."
I mean, I can't blame us as brothers for this mindset. It is a trap that was set for Us. However, I am also of the mind that when we become aware of the trap, we try to dodge it at all costs.
Therefore, I leave you with this. Study and watch your favorite gold-studded rapper. However, look at them with different lenses. Not as a fan, but as a enlighten brother. Do you see that the gold, truly does not glitter. Just Watch with open eyes and you will see what I'm talking about.
Closing, I leave this.
